CONSUMERS ENERGY PUBLIC MEETING

Port Sheldon Township Hall May 28, 2025 • 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Consumers Energy will host a public meeting concerning the J.H. Campbell Remedial Action Plan for the Solid Waste Disposal Areas. During the meeting, Consumers Energy will focus on the interim remedial strategy consisting of a hydraulic barrier and a constructed treatment wetland. Topics of discussion will include how the remedial strategies were selected, how the interim strategy will be implemented, and monitoring, operation and maintenance activities.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 28 at the Port Sheldon Township Hall, 16201 Port Sheldon Street in West Olive.

Question: We have received a few calls and questions related to some of the agenda items for the upcoming board meeting.

 Answer: To address these concerns, we would like to share that the two presentations are unrelated.

1. The Consumer’s Energy representative will be sharing information regarding a public open house, that they plan to host later in June to commemorate the closure of the plant.
   We should be receiving details, and then we will re-post the details for the public. The projected plant closure is still scheduled for May 31, 2025
2. Our County Commissioner Jim Barry has asked to give regular updates to the board regarding items that the County is working on. This presentation is one of those regular (potentially quarterly) updates.

Open Clerk Hours for Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 8:00 am-4:00 pm 

There will be a special election on May 6. Polling locations will be open from 7AM-8PM. Below is more information about the election:

What is the election for? Grand Haven and West Ottawa School Districts have millage renewal proposals on the ballot, and Ottawa Area Intermediate School District has a millage proposal. There is also a Port Sheldon Township Fire Department Operating millage proposal. To view language, go to michigan.gov/vote and click “What’s on the ballot?”

Will there be early voting? No. Early voting occurs only for Federal and State-wide elections. As this election is a local election, your options are absentee ballots or voting in person on Tuesday, May 6.

How can you get an absentee ballot?

• Absentee ballots were mailed out to every voter on the Permanent Absentee Ballot List, and Applications were mailed to voters on the Permanent Absentee Application list earlier in March.
• You can pick up an absentee ballot at the Township Office until 4pm on Monday, May 5, 2025. Absentee ballots cannot be issued after 4pm on May 5. Please do not wait until the last minute. You must show photo ID to pick up your ballot.

You may only pick up YOUR OWN absentee ballot. You cannot pick up a ballot for anyone else, including for a spouse. Make sure to sign your absentee ballot envelope before you turn it in. Your ballot must be signed in order for it to be counted. Turn in your ballot on time so that the Clerk’s office has time to contact you if it is not signed.

Road Resurfacing: 152nd Ave., Lakewood Blvd. to Port Sheldon St., Park/Port Sheldon Twps., begins April 14, 2025

DURATION: April 14-May 5, 2025

WHERE: 152nd Ave., Lakewood Blvd. to Port Sheldon St., Park/Port Sheldon Twps.

WHY: Road Resurfacing

BACKGROUND: Beginning April 14, 2025, contractors for the Ottawa County Road Commission are tentatively scheduled to begin work on a resurfacing project on 152nd Ave. between Lakewood Blvd. and Port Sheldon St. in Park/Port Sheldon townships.

Work will consist of milling existing asphalt, adding a paved shoulder for a new road width of 26’ (Lakewood Blvd. to Butternut Dr.) and 24’ (Butternut Dr to Port Sheldon St.), resurfacing with 2 lifts of new asphalt, and gravel shoulder restoration.

All work is weather dependent, and dates can be subject to change.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The road will remain open to through traffic, with traffic being maintained using temporary lane closures under flag control during work hours. Be prepared for possible delays when traveling through this area during project hours.

Fire Department Operating Millage

On the ballot this May, there will be a millage for Fire Department operating. For consideration of the voters, the township is proposing an increase from .45 to .55 mil ($0.55 per $1,000.00 of taxable value) for seven years, 2025-2031, to provide operating funds for the Fire Department. For example, a property with $200,000 taxable value would pay $90 at .45 mils and $110 at .55 mils.

This millage is requested due to increased call volume over the last several years, increased wages and staffing needs, increased training requirements for certification and supply cost inflation.

The Fire Department is a paid-on call fire department. All twenty-two firefighters have a full-time job on top of their duties at the FD.
