UPDATE: Note regarding the channel at Pigeon Lake

We have heard from Consumers this week that plant staff is currently assembling permitting packages required by oversight agencies to prepare for a dredging project projected this year.

As necessary permits receive complete approvals, funding has been allocated by Consumers to move forward with a dredging project as soon as possible.

Boaters are encouraged to be cautious if proceeding through the channel during this shallow period. Consumers Energy will update the Department of Natural Resources and Port Sheldon Township when a project is scheduled for community awareness.

The township has been actively engaged with Consumers Energy representatives over the last several months, regarding the sandbar that has developed in the channel, and made worse by the lower water levels we are experiencing this spring. I wanted to share this update from Consumers Energy. -Township Supervisor, Michael Sabatino

“Consumers Energy is aware of the Pigeon Lake Channel’s current depth. Plant staff is currently assembling permitting packages required by oversight agencies to prepare for a possible dredging project.

Consumers Energy will continue to actively monitor the conditions that necessitated shoreline protection measures through recent high water periods and are now evaluating the current state of the channel’s depth during this lower period.

Boaters are encouraged to be cautious if proceeding through the channel during this shallow period. Bike Path Sweeping

Spring is springing, and routine sweeping of the bike path will be resuming this week!

Normally we would have started the spring cleanup by now, but the broom for the tractor was down awaiting parts. It is now back in service.

The bike path will also be repaired in some areas over the next month.

Planning Commission Meeting rescheduled to March 22, 2023

The Planning Commission meeting cancelled on February 22, 2023 has been rescheduled for the regular March 22, 2023 meeting. Agenda items from February will be included in the March meeting.

For immediate release: Port Sheldon Township to announce finalization of management agreement with Ottawa County Parks

Port Sheldon Township is happy to announce the finalization of a management agreement for our two lakeshore parks with Ottawa County Parks Department.

Over the past year and a half, the Port Sheldon Township Board has been working to address overcrowding, abuse of rules, trespassing, and other issues. Through this management agreement, Ottawa County Parks & Recreation has been contracted to handle the custodial and enforcement concerns for the parks.

It is important to us that our residents know the following:

Port Sheldon Township still maintains ownership/oversight of both parks. We own Kouw Park and lease the land for Windsnest Park.
Port Sheldon Township has contracted these services out for many years. However, with the increase in traffic and subsequent complaints, particularly at Windsnest Park, we opted to contract with a local organization who has a proven track record and expertise in parks management.

Park Rules & Changes

The rules will still be the same regarding no alcohol or fires allowed in the parks.
A big change is that dogs WILL be allowed, from September 30 to May 1. Dogs were previously prohibited at both parks.
Park visitors will have the option to exclusively rent a pavilion for events! First come, first serve usage is still available, if the pavilions are not rented. Pavilions can be rented online at Ottawa County.
A motor vehicle permit is required through Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. This permit can be purchased at the park via pay stations or the Ottawa County website (beginning in May 2023).

An annual motor vehicle permit* will be discounted for Port Sheldon residents (-$5), with an additional discount for senior residents. To receive discount(s), please purchase permit from the Ottawa County website (available in April 2023). Bridge card holders are entitled to a free motor vehicle permit.

As an additional benefit, your discounted permit also allows access to all of the other Ottawa County lakeshore parks (Tunnel Park, Kirk Park, Rosy Mound Natural Area, Olive Shores, and North Beach Park) for the season.

*Ottawa County Resident permits are $15. Ottawa County Senior Resident permits are $9.

March Board of Review

On March 13 and 14, the Port Sheldon Township Assessor’s Board of Review will hold appointments to hear from property owners who would like their assessment reviewed. Please understand that the state-wide inflation rate was 5.0%, which was applied to all property taxable values.

We encourage property owners with questions regarding their assessed value to do the following:

Review your recently mailed assessment notice
Contact the Assessor’s Office with questions and/or
Make an appointment for the March Board of Review by calling the office at (616) 399-6121.

Each year, prior to the March meetings of the local board of review, assessment change notices are mailed. These informational notices include State Equalized Value, Taxable Value, the percent of exemption on a Principal Residence or Qualified Agricultural Property, and whether or not a Transfer of Ownership has occurred. If you believe the Assessed Value is more than half the value of your property, you may appeal the Assessment at the March Board of Review. The Board has no control over millage rates or the calculation of the tax bill.

Taxpayers must provide evidence showing the assessment placed upon the property is incorrect. The Board of Review needs good reason to alter an assessment. It is imperative to be able to answer the questions, “What do you think the property is worth?” and “What are you basing your opinion on?” Appraisals, realtor’s broker’s price opinions of value, comparable sales you are aware of, pictures of the property, etc. are all helpful in providing additional details for a more thorough review.
