Giving Opportunities at the Township Hall

The Township has a few giving opportunities this holiday season:

At the Township hall this winter, we’ll be collecting food and personal care items for Community Action House in the office. Feel free to drop off the items listed any time during business hours. There is a place for donations in the lobby!

Also, Port Sheldon Fire Department is still collecting toy and monetary donations provide Christmas gifts for area children in need. There is a collection barrel in the Township offices and it will be available during office hours until December 15th.

Economic Resiliency Response Plan & Master Plan Update

Port Sheldon Township

Port Sheldon Township is soliciting proposals from experienced planning consultants to provide an Economic Resiliency Response Plan, which includes an update or rewrite of the Master Land Use Plan.
The announcement of the early closure of Consumers Energy’s J.H. Campbell Generating plant, scheduled for decommissioning in May of 2025, presents significant challenges for land use and strategic planning. The potential loss of tax revenue from the largest single payer, warrants an Economic Resiliency Response Plan, which will address future economic needs, and strategic planning for resiliency beyond the decommissioning of the coal plant.

Additionally, the Master Land Use Plan was written in 1995 and last updated in 2017, and in its current form is less than adequate to meet all the Township’s current and future needs.

Updates continue!

The Township has been making progress updating township amenities! Automatic doors have been added to each entrance to the Township Hall and Offices- this upgrade has made the building so much more accessible for residents. Another project that will be happening soon is replacing the playground at the Township Hall. The old play structure will be removed yet this fall, and the new playground’s installation is planned for the spring.

Channel Update

The State of Michigan has granted approval for Consumers Energy’s Fall Dredging Project at Pigeon Lake Channel.

The United State Army Corps of Engineers is now considering the joint permit with a 20 day public comment period which will begin with confirmation of a complete application still under review.

It is anticipated that the project will commence and be completed yet this calendar year starting in late October barring unforeseen circumstances.
