2026 Consumers Line Replacement Plan Map
Following a number of recurring power outages in Port Sheldon Township, Consumers Energy hosted a public information meeting at the Township Hall in April to discuss work planned to improve the reliability and resiliency of the local electric distribution system. Residents may recall that portions of the Township experienced four separate outages during Thanksgiving week alone.
Consumers Energy has identified trees and tree limbs as a significant contributor to power outages and is undertaking more extensive vegetation clearing around power lines. The local project also includes infrastructure improvements and relocating portions of the electrical system closer to the road right-of-way, where lines can be more accessible and less vulnerable to trees and falling limbs.
The work is part of Consumers Energy’s broader Reliability Roadmap, which includes increased tree clearing, replacement and upgrading of poles and other equipment, selective undergrounding of power lines, and automated technology designed to isolate problems and reduce the number of customers affected when an outage occurs. Consumers Energy reports that trees and limbs account for nearly 40% of its service interruptions statewide.
Residents may notice more substantial tree and vegetation clearing than has occurred during routine trimming in the past. Consumers Energy says this expanded clearing is intended to establish safer separation between vegetation and electrical infrastructure and reduce the likelihood of future tree-related outages.
